Semester Ticket Refunds & Exemptions | AStA - Leibniz Universität Hannover

Semester Ticket Refunds & Exemptions

Our term ticket is based on the principle of solidarity. This means that all students contribute equally towards the cost, which allows the ticket to be offered at a lower price to the entire student body. For this reason, it is generally not possible to cancel the ticket individually.

Refunds for the term ticket can only be issued retrospectively in certain exceptional cases, as set out in the contract.

To apply, you must complete the relevant form and submit it, together with the necessary supporting documents, by email to semesterticket@asta-hannover.de.

You may be eligible for a refund under the following circumstances:

  • Withdrawal from the university: In the event of withdrawal, a partial or full refund may be available:
    • Full refund: If the withdrawal is requested before the start of lectures or within one month of the start of lectures.
    • Partial refund: In the event of withdrawal during the current semester. Only full, unused calendar months will be refunded.
  • Stays abroad & semesters abroad:
Students who spend at least three months of the relevant semester abroad as part of their studies may be exempted.
  • Work placements & PhDs (outside the covered area): If you are staying outside the geographical area of validity for at least three months of the semester for study purposes (e.g. for an internship or a PhD).
  • Leave of absence: Students who are officially on a leave of absence are exempt from the obligation to purchase the Semesterticket.
  • Dual enrolment: Are you enrolled at two universities, both of which require compulsory purchase of the semester ticket? If so, you can apply for an exemption at the university that is not your home university.
  • Severe disability: Students with severe disabilities who are entitled to free transport under Section 145(1) of SGB IX may apply for an exemption.

In order for your application to be processed, you must hand in the supporting documents by the deadline:

  • Standard deadline: Applications and supporting documents must be submitted no later than two months after the start of the semester. (Example: If the semester starts on 1 October, the deadline is 30 November).
  • Exception for severe disability: The deadline begins when the decision confirming the severe disability becomes legally binding.
  • Exception for visa delays (full semester): If you are unable to attend for the entire semester, you have up to two months after the end of the semester to submit your application.
